Yesterday Nicholas was four months old and in some ways I can't remember our family without him....or what it felt like to sleep all night....and in other respects I can't believe he is already four months and developing so quickly. We didn't make it to clinic this week due to Megan and Phil's illness (didn't think I would be very popular taking two sick children into a clinic full of babies) but I am sure that he has had another healthy weight gain as he certainly loves his milk.

According to "The New Parents Guide" these are the 4 month milestones....the ones in green are the ones Nic has mastered.

Most babies should be able to . . .

Hold up head at 90 degree angle while on stomach
Bear weight on both legs
Goo and coo when you talk
Laugh and smile

Some babies will probably be able to . . .

Grasp a rattle or toy
Pay attention to small object held in front of his or her face
Roll over
Reach out for objects
Do small mini push ups

Some babies could possibly be able to . . .

Turn in direction of familiar voices
Hold head level with body when pulled to sit
Sit without support
Make a razzing sound
Get upset if you take a toy away

I am sure that before long he will have completed the whole list....I must say I am thrilled to bits with his progress as when he was born no one could tell us the full implications of his early and traumatic delivery.

2 days to 4 months old.......

I am getting so strong and don't like to lie down any more, I love to practise my sitting

My mom got me a graco swing through freecycle and it is my fav place to hang while she is ironing.

Nicholas and I took our regular Thursday morning stroll down to the village this morning, first for his final set of injections and then to clinic (another 200 grams = 7.68kgs) and the weather is really really starting to change....it is getting very cold and I have to dress him up in about 3 layers with just his little face showing in order to keep him warm enough. He no longer sleeps all the way, but enjoys sitting up in his pram watching the world go by and whenever I stick my head round the side of the hood to check on him I am greeted with a huge smile. We have taken to stopping at the bakery on our way past and having breakfast in the winter sun on the benches by the pond....two white swans have taken up residence recently and it is so peaceful to while away 15 minutes watching them and enjoying home made sausage rolls and doughnuts....no good for the waistline I know, but gotta take advantage of the breastfeeding while it lasts.

10 days short of 4 months......

We are going shopping today so mom dressed me in my first "big boy" outfit which she brought me from Brighton yesterday.

Weight Update 13th November 2008

Clinic time again today, just don't know what happens to the weeks....another 300 gram weight gain, so all is still on track and now weighing 7.48kgs....amazing to me to think that not so long ago he was so tiny that my hand took over almost all of his body.

I think the time has come to stop working out Nicholas's age in weeks....I am literally having to revert to a calendar now every time I want to know how old he is so from now on months it is.....

3.5 months old......

I have got such a bad cold that this was one of the few times today I wasn't asleep on my mommy's shoulder and it only lasted long enough for her to get these photos of me in my precious red suit...she says I look like a tiny baby in these shots.

15 weeks old today.......

Just a few shots of my "first thing in the morning" face....I am awake on average 8-10 hours out of 24 now and keep my mom endlessly entertained.

Note how dark my hair is getting from some angles....it is much darker than my brother and sister's were.

6th November 2008

Off to clinic again this morning and Nicholas is still gaining weight at a really good rate...he is now up to 7.18 kgs which is another 580 grams more then his weigh in two weeks ago so the clinic staff are thrilled to bits. Turns out the two hard lumps on his gums aren't teeth but rather calcium deposits which are really common in prem babies, so it would seem we have a while yet before the dreaded teething begins.

I love my big sister so much....she is sooooooooooo good with me

15 weeks old......

I love sitting in my chair watching my mommy cook.

3 month milestones

This is what I should have been be able to do by the end of this month if I hadn't been born a month early.....

By the end of month three a baby typically:
Raises head and chest when put on tummy
Lifts head up 45 degrees
Kicks and straightens legs when on back
Open and shuts hands
Pushes down with legs when placed on a hard surface
Reaches for dangling objects
Grasps and shakes hand toys
Tracks moving objects
Begins to imitate sounds
Recognizes familiar objects and people, even at a distance
Begins to develop a social smile
Begins to develop hand-eye coordination
Brings both hands together
Interested in circular and spiral patterns
Kicks legs energetically
Holds head up with control

......and guess what....apart from that bit about grasping and shaking hand toys I can already to ALL of them, so my mommy and daddy are very pleased with my progress and think I am a real little star!

2nd November 2008

Nearly 14weeks old.....

I love sitting on my daddy's lap chatting

Mommy is still making me do lots of tummy time, luckily my toys adapt to every occasion

All that tummy time is making me nice and strong and I like practising sitting on my own on mommy's lap

Also starting to enjoy standing and bouncing and locking my knees
